Albanian Adjectives
Learning the Albanian Adjectives is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you practice the subject, the closer you get to mastering the Albanian language. But first we need to know what the role of Adjectives is in the structure of the grammar in Albanian.
Albanian Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence.
Grammar Tips:
While
in English an adjective doesn’t change when the noun changes, in Albanian an adjective should agree
in gender and number with the noun. For example:
Masculine
to feminine example:
Ky
është djali im i vogël (this is my little son) becomes: Kjo është vajza ime
evogël (this is my little daughter) yes we have the change from ky/
masculine singular into “kjo’ feminine singular, and from personal
pronounce “my” /im, in masculine singular, in feminine singular is “ime”
As
you can see from the example above, the adjective comes after the noun and
also takes the feminine form.
Singular
to plural example:Kjo është macja ime e bardhë (this is my white cat) becomes:
Këto janë macjet e mia të bardha (these are my white cats).
As
you can see from the example above, the adjective comes after the noun and
also takes the plural form.
Here are some examples:
| English Adjectives | Albanian Adjectives |
| adjectives | Mbiemra: |
| a green tree | një pemë e gjelbër |
| a tall building | një ndërtesë e lartë |
| a very old man | një njeri shume plak |
| the old red house | shtëpia e vjetër e kuqe |
| a very nice friend | një mike shumë e mirë (fem.) |
As you can see from the example above, the structure of the Adjectives in Albanian has a logical pattern. Locate the Adjectives above and see how it works with the rest of the sentence in Albanian.
Note: The adjective in Albanian when used as a modifier, is placed after the noun and agrees with it in gender and in number, for example: një mëngjes i ftohtë (masc. sing.)- disa mëngjese të ftohta (masc. pl.)- (a cold morning - (some) cold mornings); një ditë e ftohtë (f.s.) - disa ditë të ftohta (pl. f.) - (a cold day - (some) cold days). During the declension of the noun the adjective remains unchangeable.
The adjectives in Albanian are usually accompanied by the connective article, which is determined by the gender and the number of the noun. The connective articles are: i, e, të. The connective article i is used before the adjective with a singular masculine noun in indefinite or definite form, for example:
një shok i mirë - shoku i mirë (a good friend - the good friend )
