Azerbaijani Adverbs
Learning the Azerbaijani Adverbs is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you master it the more you get closer to mastering the Azerbaijani language. But first we need to know what the role of Adverbs is in the structure of the grammar in Azerbaijani.
Azerbaijani adverbs are part of speech. Generally they're words that modify any part of language other than a noun. Adverbs can modify verbs, adjectives (including numbers), clauses, sentences and other adverbs.
Grammar Tips:
While in English adverbs are usually formed
by adding (-ly) to adjectives. In Azeri many adverbs are formed
from nouns, simply by joining them with verbs. Examples:
Sürət (it is a noun(not
adjective!)) becomes: sürətli (it is an adjective alone), sürətli
maşın (speedy car) – sürətli is an adjective here, because it is
used with a noun (car).
Maşın
sürət ilə gedir (car is going with high
speed) – we joined speed with
verb, “speed” belongs to “go” in this case. “ilə” is “with” in Azeri language.
As a result, adverbs should always belong to
verbs.
However that’s not always the case. Some words are adverbs by nature.
For example:
İndi (now) and tezliklə (soon) are
all Azeri adverbs.
Here are some examples:
| English Adverbs | Azerbaijani Adverbs |
| adverbs | zərf |
| I read a book sometimes | Mən bəzən kitab oxuyuram |
| I will never smoke | Mən heç vaxt siqaret çəkməyəcəyəm |
| are you alone? | Siz yalnızsınız (təksiniz) |
As you can see from the example above, the structure of the Adverbs in Azerbaijani has a logical pattern. Locate the Adverbs above and see how it works with the rest of the sentence in Azeri.
