Romanian Plural
Learning the Romanian Plural is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you practice the subject, the closer you get to mastering the Romanian language. But first we need to know what the role of Plural is in the structure of the grammar in Romanian.
Romanian Plurals are grammatical numbers, typically referring to more than one of the referent in the real world. In the English language, singular and plural are the only grammatical numbers.
Grammar Tips:
While in English, the plural is formed by
adding (s) to the singular. Generally, in Romanian, masculine nouns and
adjectives end in (i) and feminine ones end in (e). The third gender in
Romanian, called “neuter” is used mostly for objects or concepts, and has a
masculine form in the singular and a feminine form in the plural. Here are some
examples:
Masculine: Un prieten (a friend) becomes Niște
prieteni (some friends)
Feminine: O fată (one girl) becomes Niște
fete (some girls)
Neuter: Un scaun (one chair) becomes Niște
scaune (some chairs)
Other rules for the plural forms:
-
The masculine nouns ending
in (-st), turn (s) into (ș) and then add (i). For example:
Un economist (one
economist) becomes Niște economiști (some economists)
-
The masculine nouns ending
in (-t), turn (t) into (ț) and then add (i). For example:
Un student (one student)
becomes Niște studenți (some students)
-
The masculine nouns ending
in (-d), turn (d) into (z) and then add (i). For example:
Un nomad (one nomad)
becomes Niște nomazi (some nomads)
Here are some examples:
